Mass Storage System (MSS)

Abstract

The original effort had three main objectives. The first objective involved the development, test and delivery of a mass storage system using hierarchical storage concepts. This system design integrated both high-performance, high cost storage devices with low-performance, low-cost storage devices. This approach provides high-speed performance while minimizing overall system costs. The equipment implementation consisted of using both magnetic disk RAID and a large-capacity optical jukebox. The second objective concentrated on using benchmark tests to verify the true performance of candidate storage devices under a variety of operational conditions. The final objective developed a computer network model to assist the impact of various mass storage architectures and their impact on the user's overall computer network.
