The Impact of Religious Belief in Military Operations Other Than War.

Abstract

The spectrum of religious considerations in military operations other than war (NOOTW) is broad and extends far beyond meeting the religious needs of the military members. An understanding and appreciation of the religious dynamics of an indigenous people and geographic area can enhance a Joint Force Commander's (JFC's) legitimacy and should be an important consideration throughout the planning process. There are numerous assets available to the JFC to assist in evaluating religious dynamics. Because of the profession, education, and position of chaplains, they offer the operational commander a unique asset that is often underestimated and unerutilized. An expanded utilization of chaplain assets can be extremely valuable to sustaining legitimacy and successful mission completion.
