Act II Project, LAM-OO7, Trauma Patient Simulation.

Abstract

The Trauma Patient Simulator (TPS) is an interactive, multimedia, virtual-reality-based simulator that offers realistic, time-critical practice to the trauma-care provider. The system presents trauma incidents in a three-dimensional (3-D) visual and aural scenario. A 3-D virtual-human model with realistic visible injuries and internal trauma exhibits medical signs and symptoms with real-time, true-to-life physiological behavior. TPS databases contain casualty and scenario data, define patient assessment and care procedures, and provide rules for simulation and interaction. Cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological variables are continuously updated in response to changing anatomical, physiological, and trauma-treatment status. The caregiver interacts with the casualty through anatomical "hot spots" (e.g., neck, left) related to protocol actions (e.g., check pulse), through spoken dialog with natural language processing that allows the user to speak to the patient and to hear his or her responses, and through context-sensitive menus. The TPS provides realistic and varied trauma-care experience prior to the challenge of a combat or other dangerous situation.
