Methodology for Selecting Team Training Techniques.

Abstract

This report presents an expert system methodology for selecting techniques to use in team training programs. To arrive at that system, the literature on team training requirements was extensively analyzed. In addition a survey was conducted of sixty subject matter experts (SMEs) in eleven occupations including fire fighting and the military. The SMEs were asked to describe team aspects of their work by responding to survey items under seven dimensions such as task conditions and structure, decision making, knowledge requirements, and teamwork. Intercorrelations of responses across dimensions were calculated to determine clusters of task characteristics. Results of the literature and team task analyses were used to build an expert system. That system takes responses to a 26-item survey and returns a list of training techniques for the subject task. The system has been programmed for use on the Internet.
