ENT Surgical Simulator.

Abstract

During the course of this cooperative agreement, the research team built a real-time, man-in-the-loop, sinus surgery simulator. The simulator underwent months of evaluation. Preliminary formative evaluation results yielded suggestions for simulator enhancement. Where possible, the team implemented those suggestions. More rigorous summative evaluation efforts measure and document a statistically significant correlation between simulator scores and endoscopic surgical experience. This research is an important step in the technological evolution of surgical simulation in the virtual reality training environment. It coincides with the Army's quest for training that maximizes the use of emerging technologies in computer simulation, and virtual reality.
