Modelling of the HMAS Westralia Fire

Abstract

The HMAS Westralia fire incident of 5 May 1998, involved the combustion of a quantity of diesel fuel in the engine compartment. Four sailors were killed and the ship disabled. This paper presents the results of a series of fire engineering calculations, material measurements together with a computer based simulation of the HMAS Westralia fire. The modelling is used to give an insight into the behavior of the fire and physical phenomena observed.
