Drug Development and Conservation of Biodiversity in West and Central Africa.

Abstract

During Year Four of AP1 (August 31, 1997 through August 30,1998), the Center for Tropical Forest Science (CTFS) and its parmer the Bioresources Development and Conservation Programme - Cameroon (BDCP-C), continued plant inventory work at the ICBU Korup Forest Dynamics Plot. With an enthusiastic and capable local field team, the pace of field activities as compared to the previous season. The enumeration of the first 25-ha of the large Korup Forest Dynamics Plot was finished in May 1998. Completion of botanical identifications of the first 25-ha are expected by the end of Year Five. The first analytical results were completed for the first hectare of KFDP, as well as ethnobotanical identifications. A topography map has been created for the first 25-ha. The principal Cameroonian investigators recently participated in a large CTFS Network meeting in Washington, D.C., and worked with scientists in Panama Oregon, and Missouri to learn new techniques for data entry, data analysis, and plant identification. Data from the series of small biodiversity plots in Cameroon established by the Smithsonian Monitoring and Assessment of Biodiversity (SI/MAB) program are also described in this report.
