PDV Measurement of Vortical Structures in the DTMB Rotating Arm Facility.

Abstract

Particle Displacement Velocimetry (PDV), a quantitative flow visualization technique, was implemented and utilized to study the wake of a captive model simulating a maneuvering submarine. From the resulting PDV images cross flow velocities are calculated with correlation technique. A number of vortical structures, associated with the hull, sail and sail planes are identified. These structures covered a wide range of both velocity and spatial scales. Several difficulties have been identified with the present system and recommendations are provided for future improvements in terms of data analysis efficiency and image resolution during image taking process.
