Basic Research to Support Development of Career Guidance System for Displaced Air Force Workers.

Abstract

This report describes research to explore the feasibility of developing a computer-based career guidance system for displaced workers. The initial system was designed for displaced civilian workers associated with the air force. The project began with a needs assessment using focus groups of a representative sample of workers. The proposed system capitalizes on the capabilities of the Occupational Information Network (O*NET). The project focused on aspects of the proposed system not currently available in existing career information systems. These included the development of worker assessment tools and advanced person-job matching algorithms. Regarding worker assessment, a skill self-assessment inventory was developed and tested along with a taxonomy of non-work activities linked to O*NET skills. A computer demo was developed to demonstrate how these components could be incorporated into a complete career guidance system.
