The CERCular Coastal Engineering Research Center. Volume CERC-98-3

Abstract

Under auspices of the Coastal Engineering Research Board (CERB), hosted by the Corps' South Atlantic Division, a coastal engineering partnering workshop was held on 12 May 1998 in Fort Lauderdale, FL, between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the private sector. A key element of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Coastal Engineering Strategic Plan is the initiative to "Maintain an Openness to New Opportunities." In the early 1990s, Congress gave the Corps authority to partner with U.S. firms in seeking and performing work overseas. Under the leadership of the Chief of Engineers, LTG Joe N. Ballard, acting on this authority is strongly emphasized. Private consultants attending the 63rd meeting of the CERB in San Diego, CA, on 11-12 June 1996, noted that very few firms even know of this opportunity for support by the Corps and recommended that it be given greater attention.
