Department of Defense Data Model, Version 1, FY 1999, Volume 1

Abstract

The Defense Information Management Program requires accurate and consistent information expeditiously available to decision-makers to execute the Department of Defense (DoD) missions effectively. As information systems are planned, acquired, developed, and implemented from a DoD-wide perspective, they shall be based on a standard information model and use standard metadata. The DoD Data Model (DDM) is the infrastructure to support these objectives. One of the major principles of the Defense Information infrastructure (DII) initiative is the technical support of infrastructure and tools. An integral part of information infrastructure is the management of data through models, standards, dictionaries, and repositories. The DDM represents a consolidated view of the data models supporting the information infrastructures of the major functional areas and Services within the DoD. Data is increasingly recognized as a major corporate asset which should be managed centrally to ensure its effective use. As the DoD continues to build, integrate, and consolidate the data models that reflect the corporate requirements captured in the DDM, it increases the accuracy, timeliness, integrity, and interoperability of the DII. It also ensures the interoperability of these systems via the Shared Data Environment (SHADE) by forming the basis of the logical data structure for the DoD information systems. These improvements will result in long-term savings for a Department faced with the challenges and fiscal constraints of implementing interoperable information systems.
