Laser Induced Reaction for Prebond Surface Preparation of Aluminum Alloys; Stage 3

Abstract

The potential of UV laser irradiation as prebonding treatment of Al-2024 alloy was proved in a previous investigation(l) using a modified epoxy adhesive (2). Surface treatment of Al by excimer laser results in oxidation and morphological changes of the surface promoting shear adhesion strength when applying optimal laser conditions. The adhesion strength achieved by the laser treatment is similar or higher than chemically treated Al.
