Kursk Operation Simulation and Validation Exercise - Phase II (KOSAVE II).

Abstract

Historical data from forces in the southern front of the July 1943 battle of Kursk were collected from military archives in Germany Russia by The Dupuy Institute, under contract to U.S. Army Concepts Analysis Agency. These data base designated as the Kursk Data Base (KDB). Phase II the Kursk Operation Simulation and Validation Exercise (KOSAVE) Study (KOSAVE II) documents, in this report a statistical record of the Kursk battle, as represented in the KDB, for use as both a standalone descriptive record for historians, and as a baseline for a subsequent Phase III comparison of simulated battle results with history. The KOSAVE II documentation portrays results and trends in status of unit postures, casualties, personnel, ammunition, and weapons in forces participating in the southern front of the Kursk battle. Aspects of combat which appeared to significantly affect the historical campaign outcome are also documented.
