Advanced Rechargeable Batteries, Phase 2.

Abstract

In the framework of the programme Advanced rechargeable batteries, intended to evaluate the suitability. the applicability and possible problems of advanced batteries on naval ships (both surface and submarine) studies and tests have been performed on two promising battery types, not only from a technical point of view, but also because it was expected that they could become available commercially in the mid term. The batteries investigated were the nickel metalhydride battery (from DAUG) and the sodium nickelchloride battery (from AABH. part of AEG). The nickel metalhydride battery has been tested on a number of general aspects. The sodium nickelchloride battery has been tested especially for submarine application, as an alternative for the current lead acid battery. Both types of batteries performed well and in agreement with the expectations from brochures and supplier information. Further it was proved that the batteries can withstand abnormal conditions, like short circuiting and overcharge. At the end of the testing period, however, AABH announced that they will stop with the further development of the sodium nickelchloride battery. Therefore (as long as no other company takes over) it is adviced to do further detailed testing only with the nickel metalhydride battery. Beside that, it is adviced to pay also attention to the most interesting long term battery, viz. the lithium battery.
