Prediction of Crack Initiation and Growth in Solid Propellants

Abstract

This report results from a contract tasking Democritus University of Thrace as follows: The contractor will investigate crack initiation and growth in solid propellant grains. Solid propellants are critical to missile, launch vehicle and satellite upper stage performance. Cracks in solid propellant can cause catastrophic failures leading to loss of valuable USAF assets and even lives. Understanding these phenomena is important to their future applications.
