Modification and Analysis of the 40MM Selective Feed System.

Abstract

This report describes one approach to the problem of feeding several (more than two) types of ammunition of the same caliber into a single weapon. This system was designed primarily for use with an aircraft armament subsystem, however, there is no real reason for limiting its application to an aircraft. A feasibility prototype using the M129, 40mm Grenade Launcher was designed and fabricated by a contractor. This report describes the design and how it was changed to give it added reliability of operation. It was concluded that considerably more work is required to obtain acceptable reliability for demonstration. in comparison to existing helicopter armament subsystems, this system will be limited to a relatively low rate of fire.
