The Joint Chiefs of Staff: Caught in the Middle?

Abstract

As the senior military advisers to the president, the Joint Chiefs of Staff play a key role in the development of national security and National Military Strategy, of particular concern here is the extent to which the service chiefs must support the policy of the president they serve, even when they disagree with chiefs were asked their personal opinions regarding U.S. Military Readiness form the focal point around which the issue is explored. Some background and historical situations provide the context for the analysis.
