C-130 Broad Area Review (BAR). Addendum. King 56 Salvage.

Abstract

This report is a result of the Secretary of the Air Force directed C-l3O Broad Area Review (BAR) recommendation to "recover selected wreckage from King 56." The components of greatest interest were: the wing section, the fuselage tanks, and the cockpit fuel quantity gauges. These items could answer many open questions and provide additional information concerning various fuel-related scenarios. While the exact cause of the King 56 mishap may never be known with absolute certainty, the benefits of wreckage recovery were: (1) To confirm or refute 21 scenarios developed by the BAR team. (2) To search for evidence that might point to an unknown new scenario. While recovering wreckage, every attempt was made not to disturb human remains. The Operations Plan was clear on this point--"It is not the intent of the recovery operation to recover or disturb the remains of the crew and passenger of King 56."
