Environmental Technology Verification Report. Field Portable Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer, Bruker-Franzen Analytical Systems, Inc. EM640(T)

Abstract

The Bruker-Franzen EM640 GC/MS consists of a temperature-programmable gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer. The field transportable system used a small gas chromatographic column and accompanying mass spectrometer to provide separation, identification, and quantification of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in soils, liquids, and gases. In the demonstration, the system used a spray-and-trap technique for water analysis, as well as direct injection and head space analysis for soil gas and soil analyses, respectively. The column enables separation of individual analytes in complex mixtures. As these individual analytes exit the column, the mass spectrometer detects the analytes, providing a characteristic mass spectrum that identifies each compound. An external computer system provides quantitation by comparison of detector response with a calibration table constructed from standards of known concentration. The system provides very low detection limits for a wide range of volatile and semi-volatile organic contaminants.
