Multidiscipline Optimization of Aircraft Structures for FAA Certification.

Abstract

This SBIR project developed a multidisciplinary internet collaborative mechanical design optimization environment for users of the automated Structural Optimization System (ASTROS) software. The operational environment is worldwide web enabled, and is called Structural Analysis Requirement NETwork (STARNET). The STARNET environment lets team members with UNIX, Microsoft Windows, and Microsoft NT share the work to optimize a mechanical design in progress. The STARNET toolset uses standard internet protocols and displays accessible by any standard web browser. The current implementation has been used with commercial computer aided mechanical design tools that support the NASTRAN bulk data format for design information interchange. The STARNET environment provides a place for either asynchronous design activity, or team (synchronous) design activity to resolve conflicts among disciplines. The STARNET tools provide a multi-user display of goals and achievement for understanding by other design team members even when other members are not on line. The STARNET provides a versatile E-mail system, and a method for sharing work in progress at distanced sites. The Decision Support System (DSS) uses a spreadsheet to monitor and manage the display of goals and achievement along with interfaces to the ASTROS program, a team member address book, and other multidiscipline tools.
