Pyrotechnic Ammunition 1998. Alternative Chlorine Donors for Screening Smoke. Characterization of Coloured Smoke (Pyrotechnische Munitie 1998. Alternatieve Chloordonoren voor Screening Rook. Karakterisering Gekleurde Rook)

Abstract

Four subjects were chosen to be investigated during 1998 as part of the project pyrotechnic munition'. The results are described below. 1. Gain experience in using PCl5 as a chlorine donor instead of hexachloroethane in the so called TNO smoke. It appears that the long term stability as well as the moisture sensitiveness and the relatively high vapour pressure, makes it very difficult to use this chlorine donor, although theoretically an effective smoke should be formed. 2. A test set-up was developed in which a complete coloured smoke hand grenade can be characterised. This test set-up is already used to determine the lifetime of new coloured smoke hand grenades. 3. The third up-date of the data sheets has been sent separately in September 1998. 4. This year, no official meeting took place with respect to the STANAG toxicity of smokes'
