The Minuteman III Guidance Replacement Program.

Abstract

The Minuteman III is expected to be the United States only fielded land-based intercontinental ballistic missile system after the year 2003, when the Minuteman II and Peacekeeper missiles are retired as a result of arms control initiatives. The Minuteman III Guidance Replacement Program is part of a DoD initiative to extend the life of the Minuteman III weapon system through the year 2020. The primarily audit objective was to evaluate the overall management of the Guidance Replacement Program. Specifically, we determined whether the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile System Program Office was cost-effectively developing the system and making it ready for low-rate initial production. We also reviewed the adequacy of the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile System Program Office's management control program as it applied to the audit objectives.
