State Certification of Underground Storage Tanks.

Abstract

This audit was part of the overall audit of "DoD Management of Underground Storage Tanks," (Project No. 6CK-5051). The overall audit was jointly conducted by the Inspector General, DoD, and the Army, Navy, and Air Force audit agencies. The audit was performed in response to a Senate Armed Services Committee inquiry about whether state environmental regulatory agencies would be able to certify that DoD underground storage tanks were compliant with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Subtitle I, after December 22, 1998. Audit Objectives. The audit objectives were to identify each state's underground storage tank compliance policies and to determine the extent to which DoD was meeting those regulatory requirements. We also determined whether DoD and state environmental regulatory agencies were reconciling their respective storage tank inventories.
