Evaluation of Environmental Measures of Merit

Abstract

This evaluation was performed in response to the Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Environmental Quality) request that we evaluate private sector initiatives to develop effective environmental performance measures. One purpose of environmental performance measures, more commonly called measures of merit, is to assist organizations in communicating useful environmental information to their stakeholders or interested public. Imparting this information to stakeholders normally serves to strengthen relationships between the organization and the stakeholders. Another purpose for measures of merit is to demonstrate how well organizations meet their environmental goals.
