Demonstration of a Short Wavelength Chemical Laser

Abstract

Experiments to demonstrate a short wavelength chemical laser based on atomic sodium have been performed. The metastable states of SiO generated using the Si-N2O reaction have been used to energy transfer pump a Na atom amplifier at 569 nm (Na 4d2D --> Na3p2P+hnu (569 nm)). Using this gain medium in a full vacuum cavity constructed following the design of the HF overtone system at the University of Illinois, Urbana, we have pursued and are continuing experiments to demonstrate lasing at 569 nm.
