Ultrafast Optical Processing

Abstract

This report results from a contract tasking University of Southampton as follows: The contractor will demonstrate data header erasure at 500 gigabits per second and investigate the ultimate speed of the nonlinear intensity modulator based on the Raman effect. Two approaches will be considered to study the ultimate performance of the Raman intensity modulator. First, to study the nonlinear and photorefractive properties of recently developed optical glass materials. Second, to study a complex structure comprising a D-shaped silica fiber with a thin lay of highly nonlinear semiconductor deposited on the flat surface of the fiber. The research will consider optical loss, polarization, and photorefractive sensitivity of the structure.
