Weapon System Implications of RLPG Technology

Abstract

The primary purpose of this effort is to provide a preliminary assessment, from a weapon system perspective, of the applicability of LP gun (LPG) technology to the U.S. Army's anticipated future gun weapon systems needs, with particular emphasis on the Future Combat System (FCS), the intended replacement for the Ml main battle tank (MBT). The focus is at the weapon system level, as opposed to the details of implementation. Admittedly, these are often far from trivial, but they determine the difficulty of implementation and not the desirability of doing so. The secondary purpose is to provide, based on the current technology development status and as driven by the specific characteristics of the gun weapon systems discussed, the future development needs should the U.S. Army choose to continue development of this technology.
