A Descriptive Analysis of Dental Conditions Occurring During Conflicts, Deployments, and Field Training Exercises

Abstract

This study was designed to determine the types and incidence of dental conditions that occur in a variety of operational scenarios and to identify the appropriate mix of supplies for treating those conditions. The purpose of Phase I, reported here, is to describe the incidence and distribution of dental conditions occurring to Marine Corps personnel during combat, deployments, and field training exercises. Data were gathered from scientific journals, after-action reports, and personal communications. A list of dental conditions that might be expected to present in a theater of operations was developed based on these data. Incidence rates for the different scenarios were calculated. In Phase II the dental procedures required to treat each dental condition will be identified, and the supplies required for each procedure will be determined.
