Cultural Resources Evaluation of the Lower Atchafalaya Backwater Area South Louisiana.

Abstract

The results of cultural resources investigations conducted by Coastal Environments, Inc., in the Atchafalaya Backwater Area of southeast Louisiana are presented. The research was carried out under contract to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District in relation to the Lower Atchafalaya Basin Reevaluation Study. The study area encompassed about 760 square miles and included portions of Iberville, Assumption, Lafourche, Terrebonne, St. Martin and St. Mary parishes. The first phase of the study involved the development of a research design that summarized existing information on the geomorphology, ecology, history and archaeology of the area and presented a model of prehistoric and historic settlement there. The second phase of the study consisted of a sample survey of 1800 acres designed to gather data to test the model developed in the research design. In addition, previous collections from sites in the study area were reanalyzed and 11 previously recorded sites located in the study area were revisited and information on them updated. Three new sites were also located during the site revisits. The sample survey located 52 sites, 13 of which contained prehistoric components and 48 of which had historic components. Among the more interesting sites were an unrecorded mound site and several late Colonial or Early American period occupations. Twenty of the 66 sites examined during the fieldwork are recommended for test excavations in order to evaluate their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places.
