Cognitive Task Analysis of Decision Strategies of Submarine Sonar and Target Motion Analysis (TMA) Operators: Phase 1

Abstract

This report describes the first part of a three year study to identify the factors that determine the effectiveness of sonar and target motion analysis (TMA) operators in United States Navy (USN) and UK Royal Navy (RN) submarines. The aim of the programme is to highlight best practice in operator performance in a way that will contribute to training effectiveness. This report describes the progress made by the UK in preparing and conducting a cognitive task analysis of sonar operators.
