Spouses of Reserve Component members: A Report from the 1992 Reserve Components Survey

Abstract

To better understand and plan for the needs of a changing military force, the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) conducted the 1992 Reserve Components Surveys. Major topics that were addressed in the survey of spouses include: labor force participation, perceptions of Reservist's participation, use of military programs and services, familial obligations and preparedness for mobilization or deployment, and child care arrangements. The spouse questionnaire was mailed to 76,783 Reserve households and returned by 24,107. The actual population count of Reserve spouses is unknown. The objective of this report was to analyze issues relating to individual and unit readiness focusing on spouses of Reservists. Highlights of the report include: a) nearly 90% were married to Reservists participating in drilling units; b) most reported no interference between their jobs and the Reservist's service; c) a very favorable general opinion of their spouse's participation in the Reserves was reported; d) spouses were not frequent users of military programs and services; e) more spouses in 1992 planned to utilize military support services in the event of a mobilization than spouses reported in 1986; f) 75% of Reserve families spent less than $400 per month for child care on all children in the family.
