Results of the Physical Inventory of Human Remains and Associated Funerary Objects in Archaeological Collections, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas

Abstract

The U.S. Army Environmental Center tasked the Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections (MCX-CMAC) with the job of assisting the Army in complying with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), P.L. 101-601 The MCX-CMAC was asked to locate and assess archaeological collections derived from Army lands, to identify the Native American or Native Hawaiian organizations culturally affiliated with the collections, and to draft Section 6 summary letters and Section 5 compliance documents. A physical inventory was conducted of any collections containing human remains and/or associated funerary objects and included an on-site review of all documentation associated with collections believed to contain human skeletal remains and/or associated funerary objects, followed by a box-by-box examination of the human remains and funerary objects. This report conveys the results of the physical inventory completed for compliance with Section 5 of NAGPRA.
