Computational Approaches for Smart Materials and Structural Systems

Abstract

This final technical report contains the Grantee Data and technical results obtained during the grant period, May 1, 1996 to Dec 31, 1999. General theoretical formulations of laminated composite plate structures with piezoelectric and magnetostrictive layers are developed and finite element analyses are developed. Constitutive models of ferroelectrics and shape memory alloys have been developed, and the results are not reported here as it is documented in a Ph.D. dissertation of G. Rengarajan. Vibration suppression of laminated plates with magnetostrictive layers is also studied and results are present The formulations developed and constitutive models studied should be of interest to industry as well government labs in gaining a better understanding of the technical issue in the analysis and design of smart structural systems.
