Infusion Pumps: Potential Application for Special Operations Environment

Abstract

In the tactical and CASEVAC phases of Special Operations medical care, airway and breathing are assessed, followed by evaluation of circulation. Although controversial, fluid resuscitation of casualties with potential uncontrolled hemorrhage until return of mentation (showing adequacy of cerebral perfusion) or the return of a palpable radial pulse has been recommended Excess amounts of fluids are discouraged in order to avoid causing further hemorrhage. Controlled administration of fluids, as well as medications such as antibiotics, may be easier to attain with infusion pumps. Fourteen possible infusion pumps were identified.
