Department of the Navy Suicide Incident Report (DONSIR): Preliminary Findings January-June 1999

Abstract

Descriptive data are presented and summarized in this initial report on the first 6 months of suicide cases in the Navy and Marine Corps. Data include all known or suspected completed suicides by active-duty Navy and Marine Corps members that occurred from January through June 1999 (N=28; 13 Navy and 15 Marine Corps). Data were collected using the Department of the Navy Suicide Incident Report (DONSIR) instrument. The purposes of the DONSIR are to standardize the review and reporting process on Navy and Marine Corps suicides, and to develop a database to be used to identify risk factors and improve prevention efforts, thereby reducing the suicide rate in the military. As the number of cases in the database increases, the evaluation of potential suicide prediction models will be possible.
