A Study of Black and White Men with a Family History of Prostate Cancer
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to conduct telephone surveys with first degree relatives of prostate cancer cases to obtain information on knowledge, behaviors and psychological distress associated with risk status. In the first year of the study we have conducted a total of 13 focus groups with men from four ethnic groups (52 African Americans, 39 Caucasian, 29 Hispanic, 20 Filipino). In addition, we have pilot tested our recruitment procedures, contact materials and the telephone survey with 80 prostate cancer cases (20 per ethnic group) and their relatives. Based on the focus group and pilot test findings, we have finalized our recruitment materials and the survey in English and Spanish Assisted by a marketing company, we have developed four different versions of all contact materials for cases and relatives and the intervention brochure for African Americans, Whites, Hispanics, and Asians. To date, we have obtained from the Los Angeles County Surveillance Program over 6000 prostate cancer cases diagnosed in 1997 and 1998. We have set up tracking databases for cases and relatives and have programmed our Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing System. We have contacted over 1900 physicians and have sent contact materials to the first batch of cases (N=330).
