Force Structure: Air Force Expeditionary Concept Offers Benefits but Effects Should be Assessed

Abstract

This report responds to your interest in the Air Force's efforts to implement the Expeditionary Aerospace Force Concept and the benefits and challenges the Concept provides. Specffically, we assessed: (1) the extent to which the Expeditionary Aerospace Force Concept will spread the burden of deployments over a larger part of the Air Force's combat and mobility forces,2 (2) what challenges the reserves face in meefing their expected role under the Concept, and (3) whether the Air Force could continue rotating forces to ongoing contingency operations, as planned under tb% Concent. while simultaneously engaging in a single m%or war.
