Applications of Image Processing to Mine WarFare Sonar

Abstract

It is the intention of the author that this report serve as a strategic review of the potential for image processing techniques to aid the detection and classification of underwater mines and mine-like objects in various modes of sonar imagery. Image processing techniques to improve the performance of mine hunting operations using sector-scan, side-scan and the Acoustic Mine Imaging (AMI) project imagery are considered. Four basic components of any Computer-Aided Detection and Classification (CADCAC) technique are considered, namely, enhancement, segmentation, computer-aided detection, and computer-aided classification. In each of these fields, image processing techniques from the literature are examined and possible extensions or alternatives are discussed.
