Upland Animal Bioassays of Dredged Material

Abstract

This note introduces the concept of using an upland animal as an indicator of the contaminants in dredged material (1) proposed for disposal in an upland environment or (2) already placed in an upland disposal facility. Examples of the applications of an animal bioassay procedure to estuarine and freshwater dredged material placed in an upland environment have been published in several recent papers. The text of this note is taken from a review prepared for the International Conference on Earthworms in Waste and Environmental Management, Cambridge, UK (Rhett, Simmers, and Lee In Press).
