Distribution of Weapons Radiation in Japanese Residential Structures
Abstract
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Health Physics Research Reactor, attached to a hoist platform on a 150O-ft tower at the Nevada Test Site, was used in a continuation of studies to evaluate radiation doses of persons exposed to-nuclear weapons. As a part of the operation, distribution of radiation in radiation analogs of Japanese residences was studied. Measurements of neutron and gamma radiation were made in single houses and in group configurations. Formulae describing the radiation patterns with respect to house parameters were derived by the use of multiple regression analysis. Nine parameters were found to predict the radiation exposures at the measured points so that 50% of the predictions were in error by less than +/-6% and 90% of the predictions were in error by less than +/-l7%. These formulae can be used to evaluate individual exposures in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
