Emissivity of Deep Sea Hydrothermal Vent Plumes

Abstract

Vent plumes represent a significant factor in the transfer of energy from the interior of the earth to the deep sea. The visible portion of this radiation is important to the understanding of the physical and chemical nature of vents, most of the energy is emitted in the long wavelength thermal end of the spectrum. To evaluate this factor it is important to be able to have a reasonable quantitative value for the emissivity. An experimental procedure is suggested for such a measurement.
