Parts Delays at Maintenance Depots: A Significant Problem

Abstract

This report examines awaiting parts (AWP) delays at maintenance depots of the Department of Defense (DoD). It provides evidence that AWP delays are not rare or brief. It also shows how they increase the cost to repair and how they could affect weapon system readiness adversely. The report investigates local parts support at the depots and how it can be improved to reduce AWP delays. It also reviews wholesale parts availability and how DoD can improve it. Finally, the report describes private-sector practices that can reduce AWP delays.
