Protocol Considerations for Distributed Sensor Networks

Abstract

In this report, we consider the problem of developing large-scale distributed sensor networks. We briefly describe the motivation behind the development of such networks and then consider the expected characteristics of the networking environment. We define a concept of operations for sensor network applications that allows expected characteristics to be exploited for maximizing the scalability of networking solutions. Finally, we discuss the available and emerging networking protocols, provide insight into their applicability for supporting distributed sensor networks, and identify areas for further research.
