Puff Dispersion Sigma Values from MVP4 at VAFB

Abstract

This report documents the calculation of a values (standard deviation of material distribution) for several series of SF6 puffs released over Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB) in May 1997 as part of the Model Validation Program (MVP). Using an assumption of Gaussianity for the distribution of the material, the a values are calculated based on measurements of maximum visual extent of the puffs provided by R. Abernathy1. Turbulence fluctuation values derived from the a values can be used for the evaluation of REEDM's turbulence algorithm.
