Detection of the 27 Aug 1998 Gamma Ray Flare, and Ionospheric Effects of Relativistic Electron Flux Enhancements

Abstract

Intense gamma ray flares and enhanced relativistic electron precipitation can have profound effects upon the characteristics of the nighttime D-region of the ionosphere. We examine recent examples of these phenomena and discuss their effects upon HAARP systems.
