Determination of Rock Mass Rating and Deformation Moduli - 14 Cross Sections of Portugues Dam Foundation - December 1999

Abstract

This report describes the development of rock mass rating values for the purpose of estimating rock mass moduli for the Portugues Dam, Ponce, Puerto Rico. The Serafim and Pereira (1983) correlation of Rock Mass Rating to modulus was used in the analysis. Fourteen geologic cross sections were evaluated which were widely distributed along the foundation axis. Rock Mass Ratings were determined for each lithologic unit depicted in these cross sections by projecting rock mass characterization data from deep (-100-to 200-ft.) borings. The purpose of this analysis was to provide rock mass moduli to District structural engineers for subsequent dam stability analyses.
