PERFORMANCE AND ACCOUNTABILITY: Challenges Facing the Department of Transportation

Abstract

We are here today to discuss the critical challenges facing the Department of Transportation (DOT). My testimony is based on reports we issued in January as part of GAO's performance and accountability series on major management challenges and program risks facing federal agencies and the federal government as a whole. 1 With $58.5 billion in funding for fiscal year 2001, the Department faces critical challenges in achieving its goals of ensuring the safe and efficient movement of people and goods and in making cost-effective investments in the nation's transportation infrastructure.
