Development of Improved Performance Research Integration Tool (IMPRINT) Performance Degradation Factors for the Air Warrior Program

Abstract

The Human Research & Engineering Directorate of the U.S. Army Research Laboratory was asked by the Program Manager for Aircrew Integrated Systems (PM ACIS) to examine the effects of clothing and individual equipment (CIE) and aircrew life support equipment (ALSE) on the performance of Army aviators. These effects were quantified in terms of the additional time needed to perform certain types of tasks as a direct result of the equipment and ensembles. Through the completion of detailed questionnaires by subject matter experts, estimates of performance were collected and analyzed, and a set of performance degradation factors was developed. This methodology was developed in concert with the modeling tool, the Improved Performance Research Integration Tool (IMPRINT), in order to predict the effects of CIE and ALSE on mission- and system-level performance through detailed computer modeling. This methodology demonstrated success in converting otherwise subjective data into a quantifiable and generalizable modeling approach.
