Support for Conference Entitled The Fifth PHANTOM Users Group Workshop

Abstract

The Fifth PHANToM Users Group (PUG2000) brought together, in an intimate setting, participants who are actively engaged in making computer haptics practical and useful through the use of the PHANTOM Haptic Interface. While most participants were expected to be active PHANToM users, we encouraged participation by non-PHANToM users who bring special perspectives relevant to the community's interests. Although many venues for discussion of computer-based haptics have emerged in recent years, there is particular value in bringing together individuals who share the common platform embodied in the PHANTOM haptic system. In doing so, we were able to make realistic comparisons of the progress we have made in the development of the hardware, architectural, algorithmic and psychophysical components that comprise haptic systems. More importantly, we forged ways to build on each other's results and guide the development of the PHANTOM haptic system to provide for our common needs.
