Growing Leaders. The Presidential Management Intern Program

Abstract

This report reviews the status of the Presidential Management Intern (PMI) Program and the activities of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management in administering that program. Overall, the PMI Program has met with considerable success in attracting high quality, high potential individuals to Federal service. However, there is a lack of consensus as to the purpose of the program. More than one out of five supervisors of PMIs view the program simply as a method of hiring master's level graduates and not a method for selecting and developing individuals with management potential. The report offers several recommendations intended to ensure that the PMI Program remains an effective tool in helping the Government address its future leadership needs.
